COURSE OVERVIEW AND TARGET AUDIENCE:
Economic and market forces have continued to influence the path of bariatric/metabolic surgery. Procedures continue to evolve, others become extinct, while we continue to resurrect older operations in order to lessen the burden of invasive surgery. The challenge for the experienced bariatric surgeon is to recognize which is revolutionary, adopt which has proven benefit to his/her patients, and avoid the temptation of choosing novelty over effectiveness. Many times it is easier to ask the opinion of experts, rather than take on the arduous and laborious task of synthesizing the available evidence for ourselves. However, not unique to this specialty, some knowledge and experience never makes it to publication, yet can be just as important and valuable for the practicing surgeon. This, the third collaboration between ASMBS and IFSO, is designed to give the experienced bariatric/metabolic surgeon the best of both worlds: evidence-based best practice. This symposium is divided into four parts. The first will review advanced techniques and tips from leaders in the field for the most common operations as well as currently available technologies such as single-Incision procedures. The second part will be devoted to complication management. The third will deal with reoperations. The fourth will focus on longterm outcomes and cultural/economic influences on the indications and type of surgery. For U. S. bariatric surgeons, participation in this symposium will provide CME education designed for the specific specialty of bariatric surgery which may be used in Part II – Lifelong learning and self-assessment of Maintenance of Certification (MOC). We encourage you to register early; registration is limited.
Course Objectives:
At the completion of this symposium, attendees should be able to :
- Review advanced and controversial technical aspects of the adjustable gastric band, sleeve gastrectomy, gastric bypass, biliopancreatic diversion, duodenal switch, single incision and endoscopic surgical procedures
- Discuss complication management of each of these operations
- Discuss re-operative strategies for each of these operations
- Review long-term results of each operation and limitations in follow-up
- Discuss how cultural and economic variables can influence outcomes
- Evaluate knowledge of new technologies and various bariatric surgery procedures to help meet MOC Level II CME requirements
